Followingthe Volkswagen Type 2 T2, the Type 3 T3 initially featured air-cooled engines; later models had water-cooled engines. 1986 model year models received revisions including a rev counter, more fabric choices, redesigned air conditioning, enlarged water-cooled engine with a more advanced engine management system, and redesigned transmissions. Exterior changes included rectangular headlights (on selected models), and different paint options. Alloy wheels, larger and squarer plastic bumpers with trim along the rocker panels were optional, the GL model being the most luxurious with velour upholstery.

Our one owner from new, T3 Caravelle GL has seven-seats and looks pretty much as it did the day it rolled out of Cleeve Motors Volkswagen dealer in Gloucester in March 1987. Power is supplied by the 2.1 naturally aspirated 4 cylinder ‘WasserBoxer’ water-cooled boxer engine, with 2 valves per cylinder that provides power and torque figures of 112 bhp and is driven through a five-speed manual transmission. It shows just 62,300 miles (having travelled less than 200 miles in the last 7years) and comes complete with owner’s pack and service book containing the original spec sticker and supplying dealer stamps in the front cover along with PDI. All bar two of the twenty one stamps within are by VW main dealers with the other two by recognised marque specialists (last serviced 8th June 2020).

Looking at the prices that T1 and T2 are commanding the T3 is very much in the ascendancy and is surely a fine investment for the future. To find one as nice as this is virtually unheard of and for it to be such a practical vehicle to use should make it even more attractive.
