“If you can't afford a 996 Series Porsche 911, don't drive one. Resist the temptation. Just say no. As one of the best driver's machines around, it will transform you into a motoring malcontent, cursing your previous car's flabby steering and gutless throttle response.”
As this RAC review made clear, the 996 version of the legendary 911 was every bit as addictive as its forebears. Around in one form or another for over half a century, the 911 had carved a reputation as a brilliant but slightly malevolent, air-cooled rear-engined beast. In 1997, with the launch of the 996 series, the 911 had 'malevolent' and 'air-cooled' struck from its vocabulary.
These water-cooled Porsches were a huge step forward, their dynamic excellence silencing most of the critics who felt it heretic to liquid cool a 911. Powered by a 296bhp 3.4-litre engine, the 996 was slippery as a barof soap and could sprint to 60mph in just 5.6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 174mph. And all this to a spine-tingling soundtrack from the howling flat-six.
This smart September 2000 Carrera 4 Coupe boasts all-wheel drive traction, Tiptronic transmission, factory aero kit and Sport design split-rim 18” alloy wheels. Purchased by the current keeper in 2015 with a damaged engine, he set about returning it to the road and sought out the expertise of renowned Porsche specialists, Serdi Precision Engineering of Uxbridge.
This included a full engine rebuild with new steel liners, new chains, tensioners, radiator, stainless steel silencers plus a host of other parts, virtually all OEM from Porsche. The total bill for this exceeded £6,000 and since then the car has only covered around 10,000 miles.
Now showing just over 99,200 miles, it comes with invoices and photographs of the engine rebuild and a duplicate service book with five stamps from 47,990 miles in October 2005 to 96,127 miles in January 2018, all by Porsche Centre Sutton Coldfield. It has also recently been fitted with a Porsche Classic radio that includes sat nav and permits playback of various media types.
Treated to a new set of front brake discs and pads recently,it has an MOT to June 2020 and also comes with a personalised registration number, 541 GVT. Lots more images are available on request.
