The last of the line of MG Midgets actually started life asa re-badged Austin Healey Sprite. A development of the famous 'Frogeye', the Sprite used a unitary body with double wishbone suspension at the front and 1/4 elliptic springs at the rear.
The first cars had rudimentary sliding side screens and were quite primitive. As time went on, improvements such as winding windows, semielliptic rear springs and engine capacity increases from 948cc, through 1,098cc to the 1,275cc A-Series engine from the Mini Cooper S were introduced. By the time the Mk111 was launched in 1966 with a proper folding hood, the car had evolved significantly.
This model lasted until 1974 when major revisions were undertaken including rubber bumpers and the 1500cc engine from the Spitfire -things were never quite the same after that.
Our Midget was registered on 1st April 1967 and remained in the same family ownership in West Sussex until 2009 some 42 years! It then was purchased by a gentleman in Chertsey who owned it for 6 years before being sold to a gentleman in Oxfordshire who owned it for 4 years before selling it on to the last owner in2019 who kept it for 12 months –he purchased it for his wife who just didn’t get around to driving it!
It has had a lot of money spent on it over the years – a major restoration of the bodywork in 1987 carried out by Kingfisher Cars in Guildford and in 1999 a major engine re-build at 88,600 miles (less than 5,000 miles ago). It remains a lovely car to drive and has just been serviced and MOT’d (despite being MOT exempt) and maintains a wonderful patina – These early Mk111 Midgets have grown in popularity over the last few years which is not surprising since they offer bags of fun and are very easy to own. This well presented car looks just the ticket!
