As the heritage certificate confirms, this matching numbers 1956 model (registered November 1955) was built on 20th October and dispatched on 4th November to Henlys Limited, London and given a Middlesex registration number 958GMK (which it still retains). It was then registered to CAV Ltd, Acton, Middlesex and converted to a fire tender where it remained on factory duty until 1979 covering a mileage of just 3,286. It was then purchased by Mr Sharp and sold to a good friend in Pembrokeshire who we bought the vehicle from in 2005.
Well known n the Land Rover Series One club and over nearly 15 years of ownership it has recently undergone a sympathetic professional restoration over two years by a well-respected local classic car specialist Nick Sawyer. Full details are available but there is not room on this sheet for all the work carried out to be itemised.
More recently it has been used as a wedding vehicle on a couple of occasions and for fun drives out in the sunshine with the occasional off road trip.
What we have now is a fantastic example of an original UK supplied 86” Series 1 Land Rover, the chassis has not needed to be welded as it was always so good, the externals look fantastic and the vehicle starts and drives impeccably and appears to be a great investment in the classic car market.
The original PTO gearbox (that used to drive the fire engine pump) remains attached and working.
The restoration ensured that the correct dome headed rivets were used, to ensure this vehicle was restored as close to factory specifications as possible. Additional extras include an oil pressure and water temperature gauge and smiths heater.
Almost all Series Land Rovers we have drip a little oil, some quite a lot, 958GMK is the exception though no drips of oil to speak of even after standing for days in the same place.
The canvas tilt is showing some signs of age and could do with replacing and is easily obtainable at a cost of c£350.
