The‘Squariel’ was produced from 1931 to 1959 and has become one of the best-known British motorcycle designs from the period. At the centre of the design was aninteresting engine – not in a straight or V configuration as with most multi-cylindermotorcycle engines, but rather in ‘square’ form. Also known as U configuration, this involved two pairs of cylinders in parallel, with each pair having its owncrankshaft. The crankshafts were counter-rotating, the idea being that thiswould cancel out any vibration that might otherwise arise, making the engine as smooth as possible. Over time the engine evolved from 500cc to 1000cc, and bythe 1950s the bike was producing 40bhp and could reach 100mph.
Our 1955 Square Four comes with a Blacknell Sports sidecar. Believed to be a bullet model, Blacknell produced a fine range of British sidecars from theirNottingham works and they have long been regarded as one of the premier UK sidecarmanufacturers, their products having an excellent reputation for quality and style and are extremely collectable in their own right. The bike comes from a private collection and has just been recommissioned which has included a new uprated Morgo oil pump, new HT leads and a complete service and is now running beautifully.
Matching numbers and original, these combinations are few and far between and it’s readyto ride and enjoy, with or without a passenger!
