Inspired by the success of Citroen’s 2CV, Renault saw the opportunity to create a more refined version of the utilitarian runabout, with an up-to-date engine, low-maintenance running gear, and a more comfortable interior. Like the 2CV, it is equipped with long-travel independent suspension that makes it a boon on rough roads and rural tracks.
The success of this resulting design is well illustrated by the sales figures of the time. The first million cars sold within the first four and a half years after launch with the final production count in excess of eight million vehicles – where have they all gone?
By 1978, the GTL had arrived. It had the 1108cc water-cooled engine that was used in the 6 TL and the Estafette van, bigger drum brakes which were later upgraded to disc brakes at the front.
Unique styling features on the GTL include the grey grille, bumpers, and plastic cladding. As a later model, it also features synchromesh of all four gear ratios.
The RHD car that we have for sale here was built in 1984 and has the desirable GTL specification. Complete with disc brakes it has had much attention lavished on it over the years. In 2015 it was subjected to a full body off chassis restoration(costing over £6,000) including shot blasting of the chassis, new body panels where required, welding repairs, full paintwork, powder coated wheels, rebuilt engine, replacement suspension, seats in fact very little expense was spared in bringing this lovey car back up to standard. Invoices on file dating back to 1989 total £17887.
What we have now is a very usable quirky and fun classic car waiting for a new custodian.
