Its sports cars having relied exclusively on four-cylinder engines for the preceding decade-and-a-half, Triumph turned to six cylinders to extend the life and improve the performance of the much loved 'TR' series. Similar to the preceding four-cylinder TR4A - the first TR with independent rear suspension - but with Triumph's 2.5-litre, six-cylinder engine installed in place of the old 2.1-liter four, the TR5 was produced during the 1968 model year only pending the arrival of the TR6. Restyled for 1969 by Karmann of Osnabruck, the TR6 sported a full-width nose and squared-off tail. Under the skin the chassis remained basically the same as its independently-rear-suspended TR4A ancestor's while the 2.5-liter power unit was unchanged, producing 150bhp initially and a more civilised 125bhp by the end of production.
According to the heritage certificate, our car was manufactured in 1973 and first registered in the UK in August 1992 having initially spending most of its life in the United States before returning in 1989. Professionally converted to RHD, the vehicle was then subject to a long term body off restoration thought to have commenced in 1989 when it was purchased by a Mr Kevin Huckfield and finished in 1993, a full replacement engine rebuild (original engine block still available) was undertaken with some sensible fast road tuning modifications including new pistons, unleaded cylinder head, Kent 771 camshaft, SK Racing triple twin choke side draft carburettors, TWM performance manifold, sports exhaust and many other suspension (polybushed) (Hunter realigned) and brake components were upgraded and fitted to make this an even better car to drive.
TSN 561M was acquired by its current owner in July of 2017 and has covered just some 200 miles in the last 15 years. The vehicle is offered with a folder of documentation including a number of invoices and receipts, previous MOTs and some photographic evidence of the restoration.
The car drives without fault and sounds superb, overdrive in 3rd and 4th working seamlessly, excellent bodywork and chassis, no rust, roof as new, full tonneau cover, roof cover, as new mini lite alloys and excellent tyres.
